I have been investigating the trailer genre using Film Space's new resources. The 'theory' behind the genre is presented in the screenshots below as I research the what, why, who, how, where and when.
What are Film Trailers?
In the beginning, the film distributor has to establish how they will present the film to its target audience. The distributor also has to convey how unique their film is to compete against all of the other films releasing at the same time, they look for 'selling points' and 'hooks' to engage and captivate their target audience.
The distributor has to consider many points; how the storyline is different to the competing films and what the key elements of the story are; who stars in the film and what their most well known films are; where it was made; whether it was based on; who the director is; whether its a sequel.
The 'hooks' of a film must help potential audiences come to an understanding of what they might expect when they go and see the film.
The genre of a film needs to be understanding between the audience and the film industry, these are expected by the audience and drawn on during the production, writing and casting. However the promise of a genre film is not just to provide us with the familiar, but to also provide something new.

Some films rely on audiences already being established to the character(s) and wanting to see them in new situations or tackle new challenges. These established fans will also want to know what happened to beloved characters such as Ellen ripley or James Bond.
