CONSTRUCTION: Green Screen

Today, I learned how to create and use a greenscreen technology. The frame for the green screen was constructed using pipes and two tripods and a green sheet of cloth. We were shown how to create this effect we used the app 'Greenscreen' by Do Ink on Ipad which allows us to use multiple layers to create the illusion of an environment. The recording is in 1080p quality, taken from an Ipad.

The finished clip is made up of the following layers: the background video taken from a plane flying over London; an image of a plane window; and the live action filming.

We are still considering where we can employ greenscreen tachnology in our work.

CONSTRUCTION: Prop Creation

For our genre of film, realism is of the utmost importance. We needed to have props that looked very convincing and mysterious, such as blood covered possessions that belonged to the cult. The most significant of these was an old foreign market stamp that we painted over with crimson in a patchy texture in order to emulate blood. This prop appears in an incredibly important scene in the trailer in which PI Andrews finds the mysterious object covered in blood, which gives clues to the investigation.

It ultimately enabled the film to look much more professional due to constructing our own props, and in the scene in which it was shown it was clearly visible and conveyed great importance to the central narrative.

CONSTRUCTION: Colour Correction

Versimilitude is important in our genre of film trailer. In order to keep our film realistic, we colour corrected the orange tip of the gun to grey.

To achieve this in FinalCut Pro, we created a shape mask around the tip of the gun and by using an eyedropper, we managed to match the correct colour range of the tip.

By increasing the softness and reducing the vibrancy and saturation of the tip we created the grey/black colour mask on the tip of the gun. This was extremely beneficial as it enabled us to transform an obviously fake looking prop into something that looked far more realistic, enabling us to keep the realistic tone of the trailer intact.

PLANNING: Intertitles

I have decided that to gain information and inspiriation for the intertitles present in our trailer I would visit the BBFC's website and find professional examples of intertitles and their purpose in film trailers.

The first trailer I analysed was Twelve Years a Slave; a film based on on the life of Solomon Northrup, who is sold into a life of slavery. The intertitles in this trailer convey essential information to the audience; the director of the film; the production companies; the most well known actors that star in the film. Additionally, the film had the rare opportunity of adding an intertitle that informs the audience that the film is based on true events, this claim is considered a unique selling point.

The second trailer I analysed was Dreamworks' The Croods (2013), a story about a family of pre-historic cave dwellers that have their entire outlook on life changed after a catastrophic incident.

The intertitles in this film appear two thirds of the way into the trailer, the first intertitle is "In 2013", simply informing the audience when the film is going to be available to watch in cinemas. The second intertitle is "One family's adventure", informing the audience that the entire film is going to centre around this family and that this film is appropriate for the entire family, its a family film

The penultimate intertitle continues from the previous, stating 'that will change our world forever', this intertitle is particularly interesting as the use of 'our' implies that both the characters in the film will be undergoing a momentous change, but so too will our world be forever changed by the thrills of this family friendly film starring Nicolas Cage.

The final intertitle appears after the title and before the more accurate date of release, the intertitle reads; 'Everything begins', a profound statement implying that this film is not only going to change your life but also how you live after it, that this film is the beginning of the rest of your life, it is that grand of a spectacle.

Risk Assessment For Filming

Before filming we were encouraged to make a risk assessment for our film, in case anything went wrong on the day of filming. We were able to use a template to format our assessment.
